show." my name is jon stewart. we have a good one for you tonight. newark mayor cory booker will be joining us, but let's begin tonight as i really should begin almost every night, with an apology. we've had a bit of fun here over the years concerning what is commonly referred to this time of year as the war on christmas where a small band of 70% of the country have fought tirelessly for the right to openly celebrate the feast day of their lord's birth, to have a mass on that day honoring their christ, a mass christ, if you will. [laughter] now, we have poked fun at this, saying such things as, there is no war on christmas or you're [bleeped] crazy. [laughter] classic wit. that was before i realized what these poor folks have been going through. >> this is the thing about atheists, they bully other religions. >> they're trying to put their hands in my religion. >> it's about being intolerant to the nature of tradition in this country. this ends up being about bullies. >> they're being bullies. what are christians supposed to do? turn the other cheek. oh, oh, no, wrong jesus,
in newark, new jersey, and how it doesn't take that much effort to be there for a kid. and i see, and i was very happy during sandy, we were able to do some things through covenant house and in cooperation with some extraordinary people that linked in to raise a lot of money because it actually doesn't take that much money to give a person a doorway of hope. and the last thing i'll say on this is, you know, for me i get very upset because when i first became mayor, i had a metaphor that i clung to. i used to tell people because i'm such an optimistic, hopeful person, i used to tell people, i'm a prisoner of hope. when we walked through city hall, there were so many challenges, and i'd say we're prisoners of hope. we can do nothing but hope. now seven years later my metaphor's completely changed, because i see things happening in every sector of our city from the largest parks expansion in a century, from a -- in a down housing market, the creativity of my team to double housing. first time newark's population is actually going up. hotels built by newarkers, employing people in our city.
and the peninsula, you will notice light to moderate rain around the dunbar ton bridge and heading out toward newark, newark boulevard and fremont area. and there is some mixed precipitation that is just to the north of the clear lake area. this is an indication as to how cold this storm is. this storm could even bring snow at low-levels over the bay area 's highest peaks. >> thank you. the search continued late into the night for possible victims of a mall shooting in oregon. police say a man opened fire into a crowd of holiday shoppers killing two before killing himself. it happened at the clackimus mall. and tonight we are hearing from terrified shoppers who escaped. >> reporter: witnesses say it was absolute chaos. >> we heard a big bang and we covered our ears and got down, and then all of a sudden we heard rapid fire, bang, bang. i took off running. >> reporter: the shots were heard throughout the shopping center. >> it was really loud, and it continued like 20 times. >> we heard people running and screaming, but we didn't know what was going on. we didn't want to look through the windows or a

can see is over the scene right now. you can see the crowds of people. this is in newark where hundreds of people are outside the newpark mall. and you can see a lot of officers trying to maintain some calm there. by the way, we have to take a look and the these shoes, reliant? >> i just looked them up on amazon and the amazon price -- but, of course, there's a lot of different flavors of these shoes -- go from like $590 in to $890 but they're cheaper than that apparently elsewhere. >> this one is a big deal because this was originally released in 1996, was seen on michael jordan's feet during his championship run. so... >> and so now people are lined up for it. there are a dozen police officers who are maintaining crowd control in anticipation of the 8 a.m. release this morning. >>> one thing that is missing from that scene, umbrellas but they will not be missing for long because we have a storm that's powering down out of the south. and lawrence has the latest on all that. it's dry up here at least in san francisco. but not for long, yeah, for the north bay it's on the way.
that is not related to what happened in newtown. the brand new senator elect is chris murphy. the mayor of newark, new jersey is going to be joining us in just a moment. as is the police chief from oak creek wisconsin where that mass shooting occurred this past august. that is all coming up this hour. but, in order to understand one important element of the response to newtown, in order to try to get a handle on the range of possible outcomes here, as we try to make decisions as a country as to whether we are going to change as a country because of this massacre and because of the national heartbreak it has caused, to try to get at that very big question, there is a very narrow discussion to be had about a piece of new technology. this is something called a 3d printer. anybody can become a small-scale manufacturer of anything. all you have to do is down load a computer file or create a computer file that has the specifications for the shape of a thing that you would like to build. you do have a limited range of the material that your 3d printer can make something out of, that you have programmed it to
-- it was a snowy day in new york. i was coming here. i was a 20-something starting in newark, sloshing around on the slushy day, and i remember coming to a pool of slush that was deep, probably like shin deep, and i was looking at it. i see an older african-american woman pushing a cart, you know what i'm talking about? the metals, mesh-type cart. i'll help this woman, of course, through the slush ocean, and then this guy jumped up, a white conservatively dressed guy who i would have had, at that time, never assumed would have gone and walk in the slush in the shoes that are like my monthly allowance, slush in the shoes, brings the woman over to the side, smiles at the woman, woman smiles at him, and i witnessed that. my day changed. that made me open and more accepting and loving. you never know what an act can do to make that change. that's what the world needs desperately because we are stuck. you see this. there's no shortage of kids. i want to put covenant house out of business, frankly, because there's no shortage of kids right now in need. that shouldn't be the case. >> so we talked ab
